I live a lie. I tell my students that I have a boyfriend.
I did this because of issues I was having at work. Issues like my students asking me out, married men asking me out, men with pregnant girlfriends asking me out and men asking me out in front of their wives. I decided I had had enough so I started wearing rings and invented "Adam" - my boyfriend.
Adam is really wonderful and has lots of great "skills" (not skills like Napoleon Dynamite but skills like cooking and rappelling and being handy on a mountain). Adam lives in Minneapolis, is in medical school and we travel a lot together.
When I was in Colorado last summer at an adventure camp someone snapped this photo of me with Cisco, the cook from our camp. I printed out the photo and put it up at work....with the hopes that I wouldn't have to really SAY anything. People could just look at the picture and put two and two together. I must say it has been pretty effective. Although my conscience does get to me when people ask who I am with and I go into this whole story about "Adam" my "boyfriend."
I showed the photo to some of my students and they liked the photo so much they wanted to keep it!!! Of course I said no...it is MY picture of MY imaginary boyfriend and I am going to keep it.
If you are wondering what happened to the guy in the photo, Cisco...he is probably somewhere in Colorado cooking (he trained to be a chef) and climbing mountains. He was super cute and I love my photo with him but he was a million years too young for me. The youngest I'm willing to go is 25 and unfortunately he was nowhere near that age...bummer. So...I have given Adam a middle name, Cisco...which means I'm not really lying too badly (white lie perphaps?) about the person in the photo.

I think it's great your imaginary b-friend is in med school. At least someone in this family is "dating" a person. If you are going to have a pretend BF make it good!
